Perhaps you’ve heard of it? It goes without saying that Rome has a rather prominent past. Lets see, in Rome you will find…[deep breath]…the Vatican, Coliseum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Church of Saint Agnese, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and a guy name Allassandro. Just making sure you’re paying attention. Indeed, Rome is filthy with historically significant attractions. It seems you can’t turn around without bumping into something an Emperor built, captured or destroyed. On Ascension Day every year, the city recreates its marriage to the sea to emphasize the fact that the city is indeed totally dependent on the sea. The Doge is taken to S. NicolÚ del Lido in his traditional boat. There is a great colorful parade of ships, boats and gondolas of all sizes escorting him, and with great pomp and gaiety he throws a wedding ring in to the middle of the lagoon. The show carries on for quite some time and is followed by enthusiastic races among gondola drivers. This is a must see in your itinerary during the Venice vacation.

Did you know that Italy is divided into twenty regions? Each and every one is different, and well worth touring. Some such as Piedmont are world famous. Others such as Bascilicata are almost never visited by foreigners, or even by Italians themselves.

When you live in Alto Adige you have to declare your first language: choices include Italian (26.5%), German (69%), and Ladin (4%). There is a German-speaking majority in fully 103 of 116 communes, and only 5 have an Italian-speaking majority. We won’t go into the sometimes painful history of German-Italian relations in Alto Adige except to say that the relations are now fairly good. As a tourist you’ll be able to enjoy the two cultures.

The Basilica Palladiana is a Fifteenth Century Renaissance building in the central Piazza dei Signori, finally completed thirty years after his death. Its most notable feature is the loggia, an open-sided, roofed or vaulted gallery, either freestanding or along the front or side of a building, often at an upper level. Put simply a loggia is like a veranda but built on the foundation and from the same materials as the building itself. In his honor a loggia is sometimes called a Palladian window.

Taormina, a charming hillside town, is one of the main tourist resorts of Sicily. On the east coast of Sicily, about midway between Messina (ancient Messana) and Catania (ancient Catana), Taormina is home to some of the finest beaches of Sicily. Some of the attractions of Taormina are Giardini Naxos – beach resort, Letojanni – beach resort, Teatro Greco – impressive open-air theatre, and Torre dell'Orogio – clock tower.
